Time for an update on what the Elementary artists are up to! I am super busy with teaching and coaching volleyball, so I am tad behind on keeping the website updated! I will try my best to keep it as updated as possible. Young 4's - They are learning the basics of the Art room through completing centers. The 16 students are divided into 3 groups. Each group is given a different short activity, completing each for 5-8 minutes. It goes really well for this group based on their age and attention span. Last week, they had the following centers - dry erase boards, modeling clay, and experimenting with oil pastels. Kindergarten - Mrs. Snyder's class of 19 is working on Owl drawings. The first layer of the drawing is completed with crayon, and watercolor will be added on top. 1st Grade - Mrs. Ekberg's class is creating very unique Frankenstein drawings through guided instruction. Drawings are done with crayon, and will be pasted onto a background color for a finalized look. 2nd Grade & 4th Grade - Mrs. Hammar's & Mrs. Martin's class are working on a very fun Scarecrow drawing. First step - crayon, and secondly watercolor. Sometimes I like to do a similar project to compare the level of skill between 2nd and 4th grade. 3rd Grade - Ms. Hanson's kiddos are working on an oil pastel Abstract Fall Tree illustration. The end result will look similar to a stained glass window. 5th Grade - Mr. LaBonte's students are taking their time with a Pumpkin drawing. In the drawing, we are focusing on shading the pumpkins to look realistic using oil pastels. 6th Grade - Finally Ms. Porath's oldest students are doing one of my favorite lessons - Zentangles. Specifically, they are making Zentangle leaves. I am REALLY excited about the final result of this project, and ALL of the projects! I like to start with mostly simple drawing projects, and ease into more complicated ones as the year progresses. Pictured below are examples of all of the projects from my lesson planning research. My students samples will be posted soon. Thank you for reading! -Miss Westphal :)

Young 4s are going to be trying something new today - Art Centers! I am going to try having 3 different mini-projects or activities in rotations of 5-7 minutes. I believe that this movement will help manage the attention span of the ever-anxious 3 and 4 year olds. I look forward to seeing how this goes for them. I have used this concept with Kindergarten in the past, and it was very successful. This week the three areas will be basic, so we can focus on the concept of the Centers. 1. Modeling Clay 2. Mini Class Mural - free draw using markers 3. Oil Pastel - added to watercolor paintings created last week |
